CMU Insights has been working with the UK’s Music Managers Forum since 2015 on the ‘Digital Dollar’ project, helping managers, artists and songwriters navigate and understand how music streaming works, and all the various ongoing debates about the digital music business.

An educational partnership between the UK’s Featured Artists Coalition and CMU:DIY, A:E Day is an artist-to-artist learning programme providing practical support for early-career music-makers through interactive guides and artist-led conversations, delivered live and online.

CMU Insights regularly delivers training sessions for teams at music companies and the members of music industry organisations. Clients can pick from a selection of existing sessions or the CMU team can create bespoke seminars, workshops or other training materials to meet their specific needs.




CMU: DIY GUIDES | READ
The CMU:DIY Guides provide concise beginner guides to different aspects of the music business, aimed at those pursuing a career in music, whether as a music-maker or behind the scenes. Topics covered include revenues, rights, digital, deals, data, business partners and fanbase building.




CMU AT VILL VILL VEST | INFO
CMU Insights presents sessions as part of the delegate programme at the Vill Vill Vest showcase festival in Bergen, Norway each year. These include speed briefings and lively panel discussions putting the spotlight on the latest trends and debates in the music business.




CMU:DIY x UD | INFO
CMU:DIY has enjoyed a long-term partnership with UD, which educates, empowers and creates life opportunities for young people inspired by the sounds, words and rhythms of black music culture. We deliver workshops and host panels as part of UD’s Industry Takeover and Incubator programmes.




CMU APPROVED | READ
Each Tuesday and Thursday, the CMU team recommends a new track, video or release in the CMU Daily and on the CMU website, championing great new music and some of the most exciting new music talent. All the approved tracks also appear in a special Spotify playlist.




PATHWAYS INTO MUSIC | INFO
The Pathways Into Music Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation launched by CMU to build connections between music education and the music industry, to support music educators around the UK, and to help early-career music-makers plan their personal pathways into music.




ECONOMICS OF STREAMING | INFO
CMU Insights has been working with the Music Managers Forum and Featured Artists Coalition – and the wider Council Of Music Makers – as they participate in the Economics Of Music Streaming debate following the UK Parliament’s 2021 review of the digital music business.




CMU SPEED BRIEFINGS | INFO
CMU Insights presents speed briefings at music conferences and other industry events around the world. Tapping into the CMU team’s daily reportage and extensive research work, each briefing provides a concise but comprehensive overview of a different aspect of the music business.




IMPALA ONE STEP AHEAD | INFO
CMU Insights works with IMPALA – the pan-European organisation for the independent music community – to deliver One Step Ahead, providing briefings, reports and webinars to enable independent music businesses stay one step ahead on all things digital.




FANBASE BUILDER PROGRAMME | INFO
CMU’s Pathways Into Music Foundation runs the Fanbase Builder Programme with music charity Help Musicians. A group of early career music-makers from a specific region get access to training and mentoring, and then each receive a bursary to help fund a specific fanbase building project.




THE GREAT ESCAPE CONFERENCE | INFO
The CMU team have programmed the TGE Conference since 2011. As well as the CMU+TGE Sessions, we curate a series of keynote in-conversations and TGE’s educational content, and also support a programme of panels and parties presented by TGE’s industry partners.




CMU:DIY LECTURES | INFO
3CM UnLimited MD Chris Cooke regularly guest lectures at colleges and universities, and for music industry organisations and events, providing engaging and interactive beginner guides to different aspects of the music business. Colleges include BIMM, ICMP, NFTS and Loughborough University.




MUSIC COPYRIGHT EXPLAINED | READ
In 2021, CMU Insights was commissioned by the UK’s Intellectual Property Office to produce ‘Music Copyright Explained’, a free user-friendly guide explaining the ins and outs of music copyright, available in the CMU Library or via its own website at musiccopyrightexplained.com.




MMF TRAINING | INFO
CMU Insights delivers ‘Mechanics Of Music Management’, a training programme offered by the UK’s Music Managers Forum. Over six seminars, it puts the spotlight on how artist businesses work, the role of the manager, and the artist’s copyright and fanbase revenue streams.




TGE ELEVATE | INFO
CMU delivers Elevate at The Great Escape, with support from Arts Council England. A team of early-career music professionals get an enhanced, subsidised and curated experience at the TGE Conference, plus we present a day of educational panels, with free access for 100+ music students.




BUILDING TRUST | READ
In 2021 and 2022, CMU Insights teamed up with Friend MTS – a company dedicated to innovation in content and platform security – to produce two white papers reviewing the responsibilities of digital companies regarding copyright infringement and harmful content distributed on their platforms.




BPI TRAINING | INFO
CMU Insights delivers a series of webinars as part of the training programme of the BPI, the trade body that represents the UK’s recorded music industry. Among other things, the sessions cover music revenues, music rights, music marketing, collective licensing, digital trends, data and sync.




THISWEEK CULTURE | READ
An online guide championing the best in fringe theatre, comedy and culture. We pick the best shows happening in London and online each week, providing handy Three To See recommendations and interviewing the people behind those productions every Monday morning.




DISTRIBUTION REVOLUTION | READ
In 2019, CMU Insights was commissioned by the UK’s Association Of Independent Music to produce ‘Distribution Revolution’, a major report exploring how the role of the music distributor has evolved and the distribution options now available to independent labels and artists.




PERFORMER PAYMENTS | READ
In 2021, CMU Insights was commissioned by the PayPerformers campaign to produce a practical guide to how revenues generated from streaming services in both the audio-visual and music sectors are currently shared with actors, musicians and other performers in markets across Europe.




TAYLOR BENNETT FOUNDATION | INFO
3CM UnLimited helped launch the Taylor Bennett Foundation, an award winning charity which promotes and enables more ethnic diversity in the communications sector. We developed and delivered training sessions, and supported the charity’s logistics and marketing, throughout its first decade.
